How to Celebrate the Passover

This meditation is based on a passage for April 5, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Exodus 12:14-27

Reflection and Question: When the Passover celebration in the Jewish faith coincides with Holy Week and Maundy Thursday, it always feels special to me. This passage sets Passover in its historical context: the scourge of all the first-borns in Egypt dying while the Hebrew children live. It also sets the basic rules for the Passover meal, which are read each year so that the children will learn the story and continue the tradition in their day. I imagine Jesus as the youth asking the questions, receiving the answer and bowing in worship. What does Passover mean to you?

Prayer: Almighty and all powerful God, we bow with Your children through the ages in awe of Your sparing the Hebrews as You brought death to every Egyptian house. Shine in our hearts the meaning of this act so that we may faithfully serve You. Amen.
